I went through periods of no makeup, no [leg] shaving (at the longest, a year and a half), long hair all the way to my tailbone. It was always freeing to not spend time on those unnecessary pursuits--- but I'd always eventually be drawn back to a little powder and mascara, heels and a cinched in waist. This weekend I spent lolling about in the same clothes, feeling unwashed and basically happy, but tomorrow I'll be showered and hopefully heading in for my first day of work. When I returned to California, though, I saw them EVERYWHERE and of course that sort of makes them less appealing. These two sandals by Sam Edelman seem to be in that same vein while remaining a bit more true to the boho strap-some-leather-on-your-feet-before-hitting-the-field-of-flowers look that I like about this kind of shoe. The only worrisome aspect (besides any shoes I like assuredly costing more than I will be able to convince myself to spend for at least a couple more months) is that the sole is always quite hard and completely flat. Are these then just not the walk-around-all-day sort, or is there something here I'm missing?

a day in the graveyard II

cardigan- Rope Picnic (Japan)
blouse- thrifted (California)
skirt- Uni Qlo (Japan)
socks- ? Oh, new shoes.

I kind of hate trying things on in shoe stores, because inevitably the staff will either hover and force a decision out of you, or they will just throw the box at you and retreat to the back room, never to be seen again. Ideally I'd like space to walk around and hem and haw for the necessary half hour of deciding, but this is not usually the case. So what this boils down to is that I like online shoe shopping best, even if the circumstances of sizing are at best nebulous. But this is why Zappos is amazing, and a wonderful free-shipping-both-ways kind of company. Onto the show:

Frye Ava Oxford in dark brown. Red shoes are such a great outfit brightener. My red wedges from a couple of years ago are really not wearable anymore, so sooner or later I will be forced (ahem) to replace them.

Frye Adrienne Stitch T Strap in dark brown. I love the T-strap heels people have been wearing the past season or two (or longer?). I don't have any trouble walking in heels, though depending on how much heelage there is I sometimes feel conspicuously tall, and I think flats are just in general better for the ole joints.

In my defense these are all on sale, but they are all also Frye brand, which is not exactly the cheapest manufacturer out there. That said, I'd much rather get more for less if that means there is actual craftsmanship involved. I won't name any names, but I am continually unimpressed by some of the big retailers whose classic-yet-quirky styles for 20-somethings I like but whose quality is just not worth the money. If I can't buy vintage then I at least want something long lasting.

sea bird

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; When I lived in Germany I got very into collecting those free postcards from bars and the like, as well as buying a postcard from every new European city I'd visit. I did this again when I lived and traveled in Asia, and now back in California I have a very high stack of postcards that I, uhm, have nothing with which to do. My last year of college I covered an entire bedroom wall with them, but that was a lot of work, and so this time around I just selected my personal favorites for a brief collage. I think, since moving back to California and back to my large overpacked closet, I have really rejected wearing pants. Pants (or shorts, which you possibly see more of in SoCal) have in the last few years of my life represented a lack of creativity and an acquiescence to reality (not having enough time to dream up interesting outfits). But now I've moved, my closet and it's contents are far slimmer, and my style is going to have to shift a bit to meet new conditions.

I only brought two pairs of pants with me (as opposed to, alright, let me get up and count: three coats, four cardigans/sweaters, eight skirts, eight dresses, nine pairs of shoes and 13 shirts/blouses), and as the lifestyle here is far less heels-and-dress than I had been living down south, a reintroduction of pants into my wardrobe might be in order. I hate to break down and buy something new (not vintage and/or thrifted), but pants are just one of those things.

If you've seen any pants like these that you'd recommend, please let me know! In exchange, only in case we've been living under the same rock, I send you now to pandora. Harkens back to the days when I actually researched to find new music I would like, instead of relying on my boyfriend to expose me to new stuff! I spent the holidays up in the Sacramento Valley, first recovering from a supremely inopportune 24-hour bug (what's a day-long car ride without some vomiting?), then board gamin' with family, and finally lots of reading and lounging. After that I spent some days in the company of Best Friend Who Has Forsaken Me For Brooklyn, who was visiting family out in the wilds above LA. Though all the expanses of Joshua trees would have made great photos, we mostly stayed in and watched Planet Earth.

Since getting home I have been scrambling to see friends while they were briefly in town, and in the past few days I have spent a lot of time staring at the contents of my closet and only hypothesizing about packing. But pack I finally did, and tomorrow I head for greener pastures.

For all the moving around I've done in the past few years, it is pretty amazing how just six months of hometown complacency have stripped me of confidence in my ability to start over. Tomorrow I drive a few hours up the coast to a new home, new friends, and new wardrobe remix photo backgrounds.

Here's to new beginnings in 2009!

recent outfits

Now that I'm afraid my harddrive will crash at any moment, I think I'm going to be sharing photos more often. I was basing the outfit around this fabulous sheepskin collar coat I bought at an estate sale last month. I keep forgetting to research the label, but it is definitely mid-century, and I love how glamorous it makes me feel. I'm not sure if my mix of yellows and browns worked out just right, but I like it all the same.

vintage bag- market (UK)
vintage coat- estate sale (CA)
vintage 1940s skirt- vintage shop (CA)
tights- ? If memory serves, the skirt was made by the Hmong people of northern Thailand. All the Hmong handicrafts I saw all over SE Asia were really brightly colored with amazing patterns and details. I felt bad for buying this at a market, where the people who made it probably made a far smaller profit than if had I purchased it from a shop connected with an NGO (like where I bought the scarf).

The things I have acquired while traveling have often become some of my most cherished. There were so many times I didn't get things while traveling, either because I was worried about money (which, when traveling, is always), or because I didn't have space in my pack. So these things that I did splurge on I really love.

christmas card lane

Not too far from where I currently live is a place that, once a year, becomes "Christmas Card Lane." Besides the usual holiday house lights, almost every home has a big plank of wood propped up on the lawn with some holiday motif. They really run the gamut, from Disney characters with Santa hats to sports to the wise men. Of particular note were the strange Santa-turned-Jesus decorations (Santa on bended knee in the manger, really?), and the creepy doll-headed figures that spooked us from across the street:

Childhood pal Jen with one of the freaky doll-headed figures on one family's lawn. The heads were obviously just ripped off from dolls with much smaller bodies than the lawn figures they now sit atop. I'm not sure if this photo gets at the spookiness of it, though that eye thing Jen is doing hints at the creepy.

Nutcracker!

yellow technology

So, the yellow PC laptop I got this past summer (to replace my wheezing four year old white iBook) is quite sick, and on Friday everything on it's large and impressive harddrive was wiped clean. Almost worse than this is the suspicion that it won't magically start working again before I leave this weekend. I had envisioned spending the week and a half away composing blog posts inspired by the Gold Rush scenery and maybe even getting my artist sister to take some photos for me. Oh well.

New York, 1958

Further confounding present plans is this incessant rain, which has helped not one but two people close to me to wreck their cars. She, "quirky" actress Zooey Deschanel, and him, established musician M. Ward, make a charming duo. I love how Zooey's voice reintroduces some classic American 1950s & 60s tunes to my generation, who probably recognize these songs but wouldn't really listen to the originals. Indulge below with She & Him's take on the following 1957 classic:

In all these videos of them I've watched, Zooey is always wearing the cutest 1960s style dresses. I think she would look great in this little tent dress I recently listed in my shop.

And while we're on the topic of music, you should check out both UK-based Paperplain and Brooklyn residents School of Seven Bells. Photo dated 1948

With the approach of winter the famously temperate Californian weather has started to sharpen, and I've gotten (re)obsessed with finding fun, colorful tights. Though I do own a normal amount of pants, I really only wear them when running errands. The skirts and dresses sections of my closet are so full that if I didn't make an effort to always wear them when going out, I'd never have a hope of cycling through them all. And we all know that cold weather + bare legs = unhappiness. So! I do believe Santa is bringing me a sensible pair of black sweater tights, but I am on a mission to add to that with some great colors.

I'll drink whatever she's having.

Though I always prefer shopping recycled or handmade over new, I've had a hard time finding these at a reasonable price in good condition in either of those markets (if you have any tips, please let me know!). So we turn now to mass production:

American Apparel's Opaque Pantyhose. The company's brazenly hipster image can be somewhat off-putting, but they always have a wide variety of colors in almost everything they produce, and it's all sweatshop-free, so I can't really fault them too much.

I don't have personal experience with these opaque tights, but they come recommended by my stylish friend Jacky. There are 15 different colors available online, and a bevy of reviews to help you commit.

We Love Colors' Microfiber Solid Color Tights. These are a bit cheaper than AA's opaque tights, would probably be warmer, and come in a staggering 45 colors. 45! That's three different shades of yellow.

From this same company I should note these amazing psychedelic leg-huggers, which undoubtedly make the gang over at AA upset they didn't think of it first. Lots and lots more options at We Love Colors.

Just to round it out I should also link to well known hosiery brand Hue. Most of these look a bit more expensive, but come with free shipping.

Six Things

I've been tagged by the lovely Anja aka estatesale to do a post of "six random things about myself," and really, who doesn't like talking about themselves? My hobby/sport of choice has always been dancing. I did a little off and on as a kid, but at the end of junior high I auditioned and made the somewhat competitive high school team. For the next four years I danced almost every weekday, and continued into college, where I felt like I really found my 'voice,' if you can say that about dance. My college career culminated with choreographing my own piece for the spring show in my senior year, which was really stressful but ended up being totally worth it. I haven't danced in a long time and I really miss it.

2. I am a big proponent of couchsurfing. I think most people are aware of the general concept, but not everyone seems to know there is an actual website connecting people literally all over the world. My boyfriend and I first 'surfed' last spring when we spent a month and a half in Southeast Asia. Though there is definite fun and adventure to sleeping in hostels and guest houses, being able to stay with a native was a really tremendous experience. I was completely overwhelmed by the generosity and caring of absolute strangers, and it really reminded me that we are all part of the same global community, one that we should all work to nurture.

3. On this same trip my boyfriend and I had a near death experience when our plane almost crashed over Cambodia. We ended up being fine, but both Hylton (my boyfriend) and I have major transportation anxiety now. I start shaking when I even think of being on an airplane.

4. The strangest food I've ever eaten is shirako ( しらこ ), or cod testes. I had it when a group of middle aged Japanese women to whom my boyfriend (and sometimes I) taught a conversation class took us out to a fancy dinner (in Matsuo, in case anyone is familiar with rural 千葉). Delicacy indeed!

Thank You Card & Map Envelope Set

5. My best friends are now spread out over five states, and keeping in touch can be difficult when our lives are so out of sync. I love sending them hellos the old fashioned way, and am currently lusting over stationary from the UK-based bombus.

6. I met my boyfriend my second year of high school, and we didn't start dating until six years later. I think the best relationships always start out as friendships first.

And now I get to tag other people! I'm tagging the stylish girls at: Pretty Little Pictures, Crafty Crow Vintage, Sacaton June, and Frances Baker.

The 'rules':
1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Write six random things about yourself.
4. Tag new people at the end of your post and link to them.
5. Let each person know they have been tagged and leave a comment on their blog.
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up.

Surburban Blue

One of my photos (and by extension, dresses!) is featured in the NowPublic's article "Are You the Right Shape?" Oh, body image. Every girl's favorite subject. Prior to the request to add my photo I'd never heard of the Vancouver-based NowPublic, and if you hadn't either, you should go give it a look. Their tagline is "crowd powered media," and if that doesn't entice you, I don't know what will.

I've been very bad about keeping up with the news for the last... oh, six months. Back when I spent half the day falling asleep at my desk in an office, I'd use The New York Times to keep me plugged into reality (and consciousness). After moving back to the New World, though, I quickly fell back into my old lethargic habits. I should get around to remedying that.

And now that I've admitted my propensity for laziness, it will come as no surprise that my rate of exercise is pretty dismal. So, tonight, I valiantly took on that past time of old: the neighborhood stroll.

I bought this handmade knit cap in Mostar, and though I truly cherish it, I very rarely get a chance to wear it. I always have at least ten things that are waiting to be photographed, but I guess you do what you can. I am really excited about some of the dresses I have posted/will be posting soon. Here are some swanky, holiday-party-ready dresses that are recent additions to the shop. Two of these are in MINT, never-been-worn condition, which is exciting, at least to me. :)

Vintage 1950s Scalloped Black & White Embroidered Dress

Vintage 1950s Sheer Shoulder Party Dress

Vintage 1950s Black Velvet Dress with Pink Flower Embroidery

Vintage 1950s60s Cashmere Coat: Coming soon!

In other news, apparently I was the only American to have not heard about the Walmart-trampling story from Black Friday. In case you have been living under the same rock as me (or you aren't from the U.S., in which case you have no obligation to listen to American news, since it so rarely takes yours into account), a Walmart employee was trampled to death last Friday, on the 'biggest shopping day of the year.' I can somewhat imagine the mob-mentality, but seriously? How can this sort of thing happen? This just further encourages me to restrict my purchasing power to online avenues (with the real-life exception of thrift, vintage and antique stores, of course). They live in the hills, not so far from industry that it's considered out-in-the-country, but far enough away that when there you feel you're in a special place.

That line on the horizon is the Pacific Ocean.

My boyfriend spent his entire childhood living in a house in the hills, and I can tell part of him pines for it when he's away. Now and then I'm a little jealous, because I've never had that same attachment to my hometown. I've passionately loved other places I've visited and lived, but I never felt rooted enough in the places I grew up. It wasn't until I started dating my boyfriend, right before my last year of college, that I started to have an appreciation for the place I knew before all others. Somewhat ironically, his hometown is my hometown, so being with him has helped me in more than one way.

His place is fun, because there are lots of desert animals that scurry around. Both deer and coyotes visit regularly, and on a hike a few months ago we saw mountain lion tracks near the lip of the reservoir. They even had a female rattlesnake living under a boulder, just outside of their house, for a few weeks. My favorites residents are the quails, who run around with a long line of their babies trailing concernedly after.

The moon and some planets.

The sunsets are also quite nice.

Black Friday / Green Velvet

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is purportedly the biggest shopping day of the year. Even with the U.S. economy nearing (in?) a recession, I still imagine the malls are swamped today. Luckily for me I no longer shop at malls!

To celebrate the most hectic shopping day in the U.S., I will be playing board games with friends, and then heading to the Deerhunter show downtown tonight. But because I know many people will be shopping (and not always just for others!), here are a few beautiful dresses that would take you to all your holiday parties and back. I spent the day at my boyfriend's aunt's house eating, playing games and bird watching. Birds are so cute when they rinse off in bird baths! Little sprinkler systems. And as far as people go, it's really nice when you get to that mostly-comfortable point with your significant other's family. I've been around long enough that no one forgets my name and most of any possible social anxiety has worn off.

My Thanksgiving outfit:

I know this picture is fuzzy, but I wasn't fast enough getting outside before the sun went down and I hate flash. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since California is a pretty big place with a massive amount of people, but still! How funny.

In other news, I stayed up impossibly late (and for someone with a schedule like me, that is actually more like impossibly early, like, other-people-in-the-house-getting-ready-for-work-early) last night organizing my 'home clothes.' Ever since I was little I have had two different wardrobes--- 'normal' stuff for wearing out in the real world, and 'home' stuff that I'd change into when I got, well, home. I guess you could think of these things as pajamas, but my 'home' wardrobe really transcends sleepwear. The vast majority of this clothing are hand-me-downs from my older sister, my mom, aunts, even my dad. And as I was trying to decide last night what I could part with, more often than not the newer, could-be-worn-without-looking-like-a-vagrant clothing was the stuff to be carefully folded into the donate pile. There is just stuff I can't imagine giving up. These are the kinds of old, ratty t-shirts that you'd pass right by in a thrift store, not lingering long enough to wonder what it meant to it's original owner. I actually have a box in my closet (which I will be adding to shortly) marked "nostalgic t-shirts: keep." I have no idea what I will end up doing with these shirts, that came from all sorts of past endeavors: my high school dance team, the few long distance races I ever ran (ohhhhh so long ago), even some stuff from traveling (that Slovensko shirt couldn't have possibly ever fit me). I've had the vague idea that I could make a quilt out of all these, but unfortunately for my shirts I am probably not the craftiest person you will ever meet. I'm definitely not planning on tackling a quilt anytime soon. Anyhow, it is a job I need to finish up today, though I can't say it's easy.

And while on the topic of my childhood, it has occurred to me recently how funny it is that it took me this long to realize I would really enjoy something like vintage dealing. A lot of girls like to play dress up when they are little, but I think I took it to the extreme. Unfortunately for my young social life, I think it took me more than a few years to draw a distinction between okay-to-wear-at-home and okay-to-wear-to-school. Oh well. Growing up I always wanted to live in a different era, so I don't know why it didn't occur to me earlier to get into vintage.

I'm excited today because this evening my boyfriend, a grad student who lives about 5 hours north of me, is coming home for the long Thanksgiving weekend. He'll be busy a lot of the time with his work, but I hope to cajole him into being my photographer so I can get a lot of new listings up in my shop. I have three absolutely stunning black vintage 1950s cocktail dresses that I've been itching to post! And just yesterday I found an a-m-a-z-i-n-g red vintage cashmere coat that I really need to sell before I decide to keep it for myself.

Finds: Day Dresses (#1 of Many)

It seems that some people covet shoes, slips or warm winter coats, but dresses will always be my first love. It is so classic, light and comfortable that I don't want to sell it, but as another vintage seller said on flickr recently, [paraphrase:] at some point I gotta face the facts--- my bust isn't getting any bigger. At least through the Internet there is hope of 'finding a good home' for it. If someone else can be happy with it, that will make me happy. I think satisfied customers are by far the best thing about selling vintage. It is probably really silly, but I get so happy when someone else is genuinely excited or pleased with something they've found through me. Yay vintage.

Mad Men

Apparently like every other girl who lusts after mid-century fashion, I have fallen in love with AMC's Mad Men. Not only is it an engaging and thoroughly original-feeling show, but the makers are so detail oriented that everything seems just period perfect. I have a hard time imagining watching the show without inwardly oohing and aahing over all the clothes the women are wearing, even if I do remind myself how constricting and uncomfortable the undergarments must have been at the time. A couple choice looks from Season 1:

I LOVE this blue dress with the button detail topped by that little bow. I registered this blog back in September when I opened my shop on etsy, figuring at some point I would get around to actually writing something.

I think for awhile I was kind of intimidated by all the amazing fashion blogs out there--- and I don't mean blogs of the 'this is what's gonna be hip next week' variety. There are so many fantastic style blogs by girls with a real sense of individualism in how they dress and present themselves to the world. After awhile of reading these, it finally hit me that what it's really all about is people inspiring one another, to explore their personal style and to be bold. And I am not going to go so far as to say I'll be anywhere in the realm of inspiring, but I do want to enter in and take the chance to catalogue some of my own ideas. I'd also like to use this blog to help advertise many of the great shops out there, as I know I've been super appreciative when anyone has featured me. It just feels like good karma to spread the love around.
